After Blackpool’s defeat by Newcastle United in the 1951 FA Cup Final, it is said that Stanley Matthews told his manager, Joe Smith, that he would like the Magpies’ inside-right in the Blackpool team. On October 10 that year, Taylor signed for Blackpool for £25,000. Born in Sunderland in 1925, Taylor was a naval submariner when he joined Newcastle in 1942. At only 5 ft 4 in, he was one of the shortest players in the game, but his defence-splitting passes caused problems amongst the opposition. It was his cheeky back-heel that set up one of Jackie Milburn’s goals in the ‘51 Final. Taylor signed for Blackpool on October 10, 1951 and made his debut three days later in a 2-1 home loss to Charlton. When Matthews had recovered from an injury, the pair created a well-respected right-wing partnership. On November 25, 1953, Walter Winterbottom employed the same partnership in England’s match against against Hungary. England lost 6-3 in what was Taylor’s only appearance for his country. Earlier in 1953, he had been a member of Blackpool’s famous FA Cup-winning side that beat Bolton Wanderers. In the same competition in 1958, he helped the devastated Manchester United to an albeit unsuccessful appearance in the FA Cup Final soon after the Munich air disaster. In 1959 signed for Sunderland for £6,000, and later played for Altrincham and Derry before emigrating to New Zealand, where he coached New Brighton.

Titus is of French (mother) and Greek (father) origin and lived most of his early life in Detroit, Michigan, in a city called Riverview. He has a younger brother, Kevin, and a younger sister, Nicole. Titus played high school football but quit because he was too small. He also wrestled at 132 lbs. After graduation Titus decided to put on some muscle by weight training.

When Titus graduated from high school he was 5′6″ and 140lbs. By the age of 21, he was 5′9″ and 185lbs. Once he started seeing good results from weight training, he decided to become a bodybuilder. Craig’s first bodybuilding show was the 1988 Houston Bodybuilding Championships in which he won the Men’s Open middleweight class and the overall title.

Titus wrote a monthly column for Muscular Development from July 2003 until November 2005.

Drug & murder charges
In April of 1995 in Louisiana, Titus pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute [[Methylenedioxymethamphetamine],] or “Ecstasy.” He was sentenced to 16 months of house arrest via monitoring with an electronic anklet. In July 1997, Titus was sentenced to 21 months in prison for violating his probation by using anabolic steroids.

In December 2005, Titus and his wife Kelly Ryan entered the news after being implicated in the death of Melissa James, their personal assistant, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple were arrested in Stoughton, Massachusetts, after fleeing cross-country, and both were being held in Las Vegas. According to the FBI, there was intelligence that they might have been trying to get to Greece. As Titus is of Greek descent, he had expressed an interest in going to a country where he couldn’t be extradited. In February 2006, after being extradited to Nevada from Boston, Titus and Ryan were denied bail during a hearing. On March 29, both pleaded not guilty to the felony charge of killing their live-in assistant. The charge carries the possibility of the death penalty, although prosecutors said they have not decided whether to seek it. Anthony Gross is also charged as an accomplice in the alleged crime.

On October 4, 2006, Titus broke silence about the charges and issued the following statement:

“ I want everyone to know that Kelly and I are 100% not guilty in regard to the charges of murder and kidnapping. For those of you who personally know us, you know in your hearts that we are not capable of the horrible acts they are accusing us of. However, I am responsible for exercising some really bad judgment, and I am also responsible for surrounding myself with the wrong types of individuals.
Up until now, Kelly and I were advised to stay silent. As a result of our silence, this ordeal has spun way out of control in the media. This is a cynical world we live in, where the media so readily releases untrue versions to sensationalize terrible events. We are in fact innocent and the truth will come out resulting in us being acquitted. Kelly and I only ask that you use common sense when you examine our case and try not to judge us until we have our day in court.
”

Titus and Ryan are due in court on July 26, 2007, for a status check and to identify when the trial will begin. The number assigned is Case # 06-C-220719-C.

Biography
Wheeler began training as a teenager, initially with martial arts in mind. However his natural development persuaded him to pursue bodybuilding. Despite this he is on record as regarding himself as a “martial artist first, a bodybuilder second.” (1) It also accounts for his remarkable flexibility in a physique so large. Even so, he has been described by Arnold Schwarzenegger as one of the greatest bodybuilders he ever saw.

After a short career as a police officer, Wheeler focused full time on becoming a professional bodybuilder, taking the nickname ‘Flex‘. He competed for the first time in 1983 but it was not until 1989 that he secured a first-place trophy at the NPC Mr California Championships. Since then, he has placed second at the 1993 Mr. Olympia, narrowly missing a win (something he was to repeat in 1998 and 1999. He has also frequently won the Ironman Pro along with the Arnold Classic, the France Grand Prix, South Beach Pro Invitational, Night of Champions and Hungarian Grand Prix.

Wheeler had the reputation of being arrogant and over-confident especially on stage, however he has attributed this to compensating for his natural introversion as a child and young man.

In 1994 he was involved in a near-fatal car accident that could have left him with lifelong paralysis. He started from scratch again, returning with remarkable speed to the top ranks of the sport.

In 1999 Wheeler discovered that he had Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a form of kidney disease. Despite press speculation as to the cause of the failure, Wheeler pointed out that the condition is hereditary, not self-inflicted. Wheeler announced his retirement from competitive bodybuilding in 2000, but continued to compete until 2002. He received a kidney transplant in 2003.

Since retirement Wheeler has focused again on martial arts, his specialism being Kemp-Kwon-Do, a variant of Kempo and Tae Kwon Do. He participated in a demonstration fight at the 2005 Arnold Classic.

In 2007, Flex was interviewed by freelance journalist Rod Labbe for Ironman Magazine’s LEGENDS OF BODYBUILDING series. Entitled “Yesterday and Today,” it covers his extensive career and reveals how a Legend can conquer adversity and triumph against incredible odds.

Wheeler has admitted he has used steroids for 18 years, suffering serious health problems from it. He has undergone a kidney transplant.
He competed in weightlifting before turning to bodybuilding. In the mid-1970s, Wilkosz trained with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

During his career, he also met Tom Platz, Franco Columbu, Chris Dickerson and many other famous athletes. Several injuries forced him to end his career before reaching its potential peak. In 1994 Jusup Wilkosz intended to prepare for the Mr. Olympia Masters, but was stopped by injuries again.

In spring 2007 a semi-fictional novel about Wilkosz’s life was published in Germany. Its title is “Was bleibt. Die Reise des Jusup W.” (engl.: What remains. The Journey of Jusup W.) and leads the reader back to the 70s and 80s, a time that is often considered the golden age of bodybuilding. The reader looks through the eyes of legendary Jusup Wilkosz, whose life is characterized by great success in overcoming enormous obstacles. This perspective offers also deep insights in the world of bodybuilding and a closer look at Arnold Schwarzenegger, who used to train with Mr. Wilkosz during his competitive career.

Due to the big success, that the novel have had since its publication in Germany, it will be translated into English. The German based publishing company plans to introduce the novel to the American market in March 2008.
